Bugs and Biological Control

Why Alstroemeria?

One of the reasons we chose to specialize in growing alstroemeria is because these flowers require far fewer applications of pesticides than just about any other cut flower crop.
On our nursery we have taken this a step further and reduced our insecticide use to an absolute minimum.
We use natural biological control to keep aphid levels low and tolerate the occasional infestation of caterpillars and earwigs, preferring to throw out a small number of stems rather than spray. Very occasionally (sometimes once, rarely twice a year), we spray with an insecticide.
Flower Miles
Buying direct from a UK grower also minimizes the ' Flower Miles '. Our flowers have to travel far shorter distances than those which are imported, thereby helping to reduce pollution and carbon dioxide emissions.

Really Useful Packaging

To help reduce waste and be more environmentally friendly we pack our flowers for home delivery in a Really Useful Tube. Our mantra is 'Useful Packaging not Wasteful Packaging'
Here are some ideas for reuse of the tube:
With all of the following suggestions the tubes can be left as them come or decorated in your own style.
  • Leave just one end cap on for an umbrella stand, use the remaining end cap as a saucer for standing pot plants in.
  • They are great for general storage of posters, craft paper and materials, dolls, cuddly toys etc.
  • They make brilliant drums. But probably best for someone else’s children.
  • Laid on the side they make great storage for shoes or even several bottles of wine.
  • You can never have enough waste paper bins; these make ideal bins for the bathroom or children’s' bedrooms.;
If you have some more suggestions send an e-mail to us at ideas@alstroemeria.co.uk to be entered into our prize draw.
